General Information Concerning The Artificial Womb

THE ARTIFICIAL WOMB: BACKGROUND

HOW DOES THE ARTIFICIAL WOMB WORK?-

The artificial womb known as the biobag created by researchers, consists of a plastic bag filled with amniotic fluid in order to obtain the same environment as the mother’s uterus. Outside of the biobag is a machine that is attached to the plastic bag that carries a device that mimics the umbilical cord and functions as a placenta. It provides nutrition and oxygen to the blood supply and removes the carbon dioxide. The premature baby or animal soon develops away from it's mother's uterus inside a artificial womb. The artificial womb or uterus is a device that allows for extracorporeal pregnancy (situated or occurring outside the body.) or extrauterine fetal incubation (EUFI) by growing an embryo or fetus outside of the body of an organism that would normally internally carry the embryo or fetus to a full term pregnancy. The purpose of the artificial womb is that it helps with births of babies that were born prematurely.

The umbilical cord is threaded outside of the biobag, which allows the oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to the lamb through its umbilical vein. [A1]

2:

The lamb pictured above, breathes from a amniotic fluid, which flows in and out of the biobag delivering nutrients to stimulate fetal growth for the lamb.[A1]

Usually a premature lamb lives in a container called the biobag that allows the premature lamb to develop normally by absorbing the amniotic fluid surrounding it's environment. The heart pump flows through the umbilical cord to the oxygenator and then back.[A1]

Hopefully the artificial womb is widely accepted in the public, then future testing will be conduct on a human fetus or done with a premature baby. The premature baby will live inside  a container called the biobag that allows the premature baby to develop normally by absorbing the amniotic fluid surrounding it's environment. The heart pump flows through the umbilical cord to the oxygenator and then back. [A1]

WHAT IS THE NEED?-

The immediate aim of researching and creating a possible artificial uterus lies with the hope of helping women whose damaged wombs prevent them from conceiving. One concept is to create an artificial womb from the woman's own endometrium bells, place an embryo inside, and then allow it to settle before being placed back inside the woman's body. A different approach is considered when taking into account the research of Professor Kuwabara. This approach to the artificial womb is designed to help women who suffer miscarriages or very premature births. Almost opposite to the concept behind Liu's work, Kuwabara is trying to give a fetus a safe home if expelled too early from its natural womb.

BIOLOGY RELATIONS-

Why it matters biologically speaking: The artificial womb matters “biologically speaking” because it helps create and preserve life. Why it’s important to know: The artificial womb can help with the safety of the birth of babies that are born prematurely . It is also new advancing technology that could end being vital way to human life.

Major Set Backs And Challenges-

It is currently near impossible for living for the biobag to be tested or used on premature babies. Sticking tubes in the umbilical cords would be extremely difficult for once they are exposed to oxygen they will shrink. Infections can easily occur inside, because of the premature baby’s heart is too weak. The baby will not be able to handle the artificial pumping of the blood that occurs in the biobag.
